Pwani Mchangani Beach

Pwani Mchangani is a quiet stretch of Zanzibar's northeast coast between Matemwe and Kiwengwa, a string of local villages and mostly mid-range to large beach resorts on a long, tide-swept beach. It is calmer and less built-up than Kiwengwa next door, with the same big east-coast tides. Best for couples and families who want a quiet resort beach on the northeast.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pwani Mchangani worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a quiet northeast-coast beach with resort comfort and few crowds. Pwani Mchangani sits between Matemwe and Kiwengwa, quieter than either, with local villages and a spread of mid-range to large resorts. It suits couples and families happy to base at a resort. For nightlife and swim-at-any-tide water, Nungwi on the north tip is the busier alternative.

Can you swim at Pwani Mchangani at low tide?

Not easily. It sits on the northeast reef shelf, so the sea walks out a long way at low tide and exposes the seaweed-farming flats, making swimming a high-tide activity. Most resorts have pools to cover the low-tide hours. The upside is a huge stretch of firm sand to walk and a close look at village seaweed farming.

How is Pwani Mchangani different from Kiwengwa?

It is quieter and less developed. Kiwengwa, just south, has the northeast coast's densest run of large, often Italian-oriented resorts and a livelier feel. Pwani Mchangani is the calmer strip next door, better if you want the same beach and tides with fewer people and less activity around you.
