Pongwe Beach

Pongwe is a small, sheltered cove on Zanzibar's east coast, more protected and calmer than the open beaches nearby, with a handful of boutique and romantic hotels tucked along it. Low-key and quiet, it is a favourite for couples who want a private-feeling stretch of sand. Best for honeymooners, couples and anyone after a calm, unhurried beach.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pongwe worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a quiet, romantic cove rather than a busy resort strip. Pongwe is a small, sheltered bay on the east coast with a few boutique hotels and calmer water than the open beaches around it, so it suits couples and honeymooners after privacy and peace. There is next to no nightlife, which is the point. For bars and swim-at-any-tide water, head north to Nungwi.

Can you swim at Pongwe at low tide?

Better than most of the east coast, but still tide-dependent. The sheltered cove keeps more water than the fully exposed beaches like Paje, yet Pongwe still sits on the reef shelf, so the sea recedes at low tide. High tide is best for swimming, and most hotels have a pool. Check the daily tide times, which shift by about an hour each day.

Is Pongwe good for couples?

Very. Pongwe is one of the quieter, more romantic beaches on the island, built around small boutique hotels on a private-feeling cove, so it is well suited to honeymoons and couples who want calm days and privacy. For upscale sunset views the Michamvi peninsula is a step up in price; for more life and dining choice, Nungwi is busier.
