Michamvi & Pingwe
Michamvi is a quiet peninsula at the south end of the east coast, split between the Pingwe side, home of The Rock, and the sheltered, sunset-facing Kae side. Just a handful of boutique and luxury lodges make it one of the coast's least-developed, most private stretches, and the rare east-coast spot with sunrise and sunset over water. Swimming off the sand follows the tide. Best for honeymooners.

Frequently asked questions
How do you get to The Rock from Michamvi?
The Rock sits on a coral rock in the sea off Pingwe, on the Michamvi peninsula, so it is a short hop from most Michamvi and Pingwe stays. You reach it on foot across the reef flat at low tide and by boat when the water is up. Book ahead, as both the tables and the tide fill up, and see the dedicated Rock restaurant guide for current prices and booking.
Is Michamvi good for sunsets?
Yes, unusually so for the east coast. Michamvi is a peninsula, and its west (Kae) side faces the lagoon, so it catches sunset over the water, which the rest of the east and southeast coast does not. On the peninsula you can watch sunrise on the Pingwe side and sunset on the Kae side in the same day, which is a big part of why it draws honeymooners.
Can you swim at Pingwe at low tide?
Not off the beach. The Pingwe (east) side is a reef flat, so at low tide the sea retreats and swimming is limited; that same low tide is what lets you walk out to The Rock. The sheltered Kae side on the west of the peninsula holds water better and is calmer. Either way, time beach swims for the higher tide.
Is Michamvi quiet?
Very. Michamvi is one of the calmest, least-developed corners of the coast, a peninsula with just a handful of boutique and luxury lodges below Bwejuu, so there is little nightlife and few crowds. That quiet, plus the rare sunset, is exactly its appeal for couples and honeymooners. If you want bars and boat-trip bustle, head north to Nungwi.
How do I get to Michamvi?
Michamvi is at the tip of the southeast peninsula, about 1 hour 15 minutes by road from the airport (roughly 60 km, past Paje and Bwejuu). A taxi or private transfer runs about US$45 to 70 one way (2026, agree the fare first). Arrange the pickup through your lodge in advance; with no dependable ride-hailing on the island, it is the simplest way in.
